Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found evidence of a role for neighborhood immunity in determining risk of dengue infection. While it is established that immunity can be an important factor in the large-scale distribution of disease, this study demonstrates that local variation at spatial scales of just a few hundred meters can significantly alter the risk of infection, even in a highly mobile and dense urban population with significant immunity. The study is published in May 28 edition of the journal PNAS.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that infects nearly 50 million people worldwide each year, resulting in more than 19,000 deaths. There are four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV1) circulating in Bangkok, Thailand, where the study was conducted. Infection with dengue provides lifelong immunity to the infecting serotype and there is evidence infection temporarily protects from infection by other serotypes. When susceptibility to other serotypes returns there is an increased risk for severe disease. For the study, the research team used the household location of 1,912 confirmed dengue cases in Bangkok that were admitted to a local children's hospital between 1995 and 2000. The available data enabled the researchers to pair dengue serotype infections with specific households.

Observations indicated that immunological memory of dengue serotypes occurs at the neighborhood level in this large urban setting. The researchers developed methods that have broad application to studying the spatiotemporal structure of disease risk where pathogen serotype or genetic information is known.

"We observe patterns of spatiotemporal dependence consistent with the expected impacts of lifelong and short-term immunity, and immune enhancement of disease at distances of under one kilometer," said Henrik Salje, lead author of the study and doctoral candidate in the Bloomberg School's Department of Epidemiology.

"By providing insight into the potential spatial scales that immunity in a population is correlated and distances over which the disease is dispersed, these findings can help us further understand how dengue is being maintained in endemic populations," said the study's senior author, Derek Cummings, PhD, assistant professor with the Bloomberg School's departments of Epidemiology and International Health.

Qatar says 13 children among dead in mall fire

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? Qatar's Interior Ministry said 13 children were among 19 people killed in a fire that broke out in one of the country's fanciest shopping malls late Monday morning, raising questions about building safety in the booming Gulf state.

At least some of the victims died as rescuers struggled to reach a child care center at the Villaggio mall in the capital Doha, according to Qatar's Minister of State for Interior Affairs, Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.

"We tried our best, but when we got there, the children were trapped inside. We are very sorry for what happened. We tried as much as we could to save these people," Sheik Abdullah told reporters in Doha.

Four of the children killed were Spanish citizens living in the small Arab emirate, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said. It did not identify the children, citing Spanish privacy regulations.

Also, a 3-year-old French child was among the victims, the deputy minister for overseas French citizens, Yamina Benguigui, said in a statement.

Two-year-old New Zealand triplets, Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes, were among the victims, according to New Zealand media reports.

"Our daughter rang. What can you say? It's absolutely devastating," the children's grandmother, Jo Turner, told Fairfax Media. "They were everything to her. She was a great mum. She was a hands-on mum."

Turner said her daughter, Jane Weekes, had lived in Qatar for about five years, although she had returned to New Zealand to give birth to the triplets. The triplets' father, Martin Weekes, is listed on his LinkedIn networking site as a senior adviser at Qatar Media Services and a former chief executive of Auckland's Eden Park sports stadium.

Four teachers and two civil defense officials were among the dead, the Qatari ministry said on its official Twitter page.

At least three of the nursery teachers were from the Philippines and died of smoke inhalation, Philippine Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in Manila.

Another 17 people were injured, including four children, according to authorities. Most of those hurt were rescuers responding to the blaze. A brother of one of the dead Filipino teachers was among the injured but had recovered, Hernandez said.

Witnesses earlier reported thick black smoke pouring from the ritzy mall around midday. Amateur photos and videos posted online showed firefighters rescuing victims by climbing on the roof.

The Interior Ministry said the fire was extinguished hours later.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Thick smoke and heat hindered rescue efforts, as did a lack of floor plans and malfunctioning sprinkler systems, the ministry said on Twitter.

Sheik Abdullah said all buildings in the country abide by safety requirements, but a special committee will nonetheless be set up to monitor building safety standards.

The Villaggio opened in 2006 and is one of Qatar's most popular shopping and amusement destinations. Retailers include many well-known Western brands, such as Foot Locker, Pizza Hut, Starbucks and British department store Marks & Spencer, according to the mall's website.

After six months back at the Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I am once again hiking across the sun-baked landscape of undulating lava on the Big Island of Hawaii, approaching one of the forest islands known to native Hawaiians as a kipuka. I hear a familiar and predictable sequence of bird songs. I do not take the chorus that welcomed me for granted. Most United States birds on the endangered species list live here in this one small state, and many have gone extinct during the last century. Three years ago in New Zealand, I heard what a world without songbirds sounds like. In a grim realization that predates Rachel Carson?s ?Silent Spring? by several centuries, that isolated set of islands in the southern Pacific Ocean lost many of its native birds to introduced mammal species, Homo sapiens among them. After millions of years of bird song, many New Zealand forests grew silent.

Yet this morning, almost halfway up the slopes of the volcano Mauna Loa, the sun rises pink and lavender over the Pacific below, and the dawn chorus, on cue from the sun, rings down from the canopy above. I hear the songs that have been sung across this island chain for five million years or more. This morning, once again, I feel privileged to be among those who have heard it.

Previously, I researched the effects of forest clear-cutting in the Great Lakes region on birds nesting in an adjacent intact forest. Since then, I have been fascinated by how human-created habitat fragmentation influences birds. If an alien species hovering over our planet in space were to identify a single signature of modern humans, our modus operandi, it would be fragmentation. Wherever humans go in numbers, they leave behind habitats bisected by roads, chopped up by residential development and isolated by an ever-expanding population.

When formerly contiguous patches of habitat are broken apart and separated by some other habitat, it is called fragmentation. The species that remain often face new challenges that result from this process. Compared to individuals in formerly intact habitats, those in fragments may experience reduced survival and reproductive success, obstacles to dispersal and movement, and interactions with new species favored by fragmentation.

Here on the slopes of Mauna Loa, the kipuka were once part of a vast apron of forest until volcanic eruptions in the mid-1800s. The eruptions sent fingers of lava down the volcano and left a network of dozens of forest patches, some as small 50 by 50 feet, others larger than a 40-acre parcel. In these forest fragments, or kipuka, we can study something very rare: the long-term effects of natural forest fragmentation on an imperiled bird community. We have even begun to conduct some manipulative experiments, removing rats from some kipuka and leaving them in others, to monitor how food webs and birds respond.

Through this research, we hope to understand how native species in this forest survive in the face of introduced species like rats and mongoose, introduced diseases like avian malaria and environmental challenges like climate change.
