Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX get Ice Cream Sandwich!

Motorola Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX

Last night was just the teaser. Today's the day, folks. After so many rumored dates have come and gone, Verizon has made it official that the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX -- twins in every way except for battery size -- will get their update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich starting June 22. Today. The update also will turn on GSM world roaming capabilities, update a number of Moto's apps, improve mobile hotspot performance and Bluetooth audio, and you've got a new settings menu as well.

So be on the lookout for this one today, and be sure to hit up our Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX forums to spread the world. You can find the full details of the update at the link below.

Update: Not to confuse matters, but Motorola's just put out a post of its own, saying "A select number of DROID RAZR by Motorola and DROID RAZR MAXX by Motorola owners will start receiving the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this week as part of our standard upgrade process; broader deployments will come over the coming days."

So Verizon says it's starting today, Motorola says it's starting slowly this week.

Business Innovation Through Improvisation ? Interactive - Jay Olson

Business. On stage.

Are you ready to tap into an unending stream of creativity for your business, blog, or third thing that also begins with a ?B?? The same skills improv comedians use onstage can help.

???? ?Seriously??

?????????????? Seriously.

Unlike stand-up comedy that?s written, rehearsed and performed by a solo comedian ? improv comedy is created by an ensemble, entirely on the spot, right in front of the audience. You may not have your own ensemble (or the same massive need for strangers? approval that I do), but here are three improv performance techniques you can use to squeeze out more creative juice.

1. SAY ?YES!? TO YOURSELF!
Agreement is king in improvisation. ?Multiple actors = Multiple ideas driven by multiple egos. Even if the characters argue, the actors must agree. Are we brothers in a coffee shop? Fancy ladies?in a park? The audience doesn?t want to watch actors negotiate ? they just want us to be Fancy Ladies!

How many of your ideas never flourish because they don?t make it out of your head? That voice inside that says ?NO?, ?HARD?, or ?DUMB? ? that is your internal editor. Turn them off. Better yet, slit their throat and silence them forever. (Too graphic? Apologies. My internal editor?s been dead a long time.) With that nagging voice shut down, now you can get to work.

Write out all of your ideas. Not just the reasonable ideas ? ALL of them. Even the dumb ones. No, ESPECIALLY THE DUMB ONES! There?s a reason you?re an entrepreneur and not wasting your genius in a boardroom. Dream up a thing or two that?s too unwieldy to implement. We aren?t making decisions yet ? we?re creating. SAY ?YES? TO YOUR OWN IDEAS!

2. TAKE IT FURTHER!
In improvisation, the companion to ?Yes!? is always ?And??. ?Yes!? gets us on the same page, but ?And?? gets us to the end of the chapter. When I bring my dumb idea to the stage, I rely on my performance partners to agree (Yes!) and then add something (And?) to make me seem brilliant.

To harness this for yourself, simply look at all of the ideas to which you have already said ?YES? in STEP 1, and then make them work. (I know, ?is that all?? Stick with me?) There are a million reasons why they won?t work. So? Focus on a million (I will settle for one) ways in which they can work. Say ?What if??? a lot. Be open to new avenues and different arenas. Velcro, Superglue and even pacemakers were all invented by frustrated scientists who were trying to create something else entirely. This entire essay began as a recipe for Chicken ala King. Your idea is often merely a starting point.

?

?Just because something doesn?t do what you planned it to do doesn?t mean it?s useless.? - Thomas Alva Edison

3. KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Improv comedians strive for an honest emotional core in our comedy ? characters and ideas that resonate and draw the audience in. I don?t have to travel to Mars in a unicorn-drawn carriage to entertain someone. The audience will not care about my comedy if they cannot relate in some way.

Who cares if your idea has been done?before? I?ll pay cash money for your take on it. Chickens were around a long time before Colonel Sanders gave us his delicious version. Keep it simple and tell your truth. Especially if that truth is Original Recipe? with a side of slaw?Yum!

?

?The merit of originality is not novelty; it is sincerity.? ? Thomas Carlyle

?

BONUS STEP!!!
Improv innovator Del Close admonished improv comedians to exalt each other and their choices on stage. Start doing the same for yourself. Don?t think you?re creative? You are. Start thinking that you are. Then know that you are. Then just?BE.

?If we treat each other as if we are geniuses, poets, and artists, we have a better chance of becoming that onstage.? ? Del Close

You won?t implement most ideas. Ideas you do implement won?t always succeed. (Be thankful it isn?t happening in front of a demanding, semi-drunk audience.) But ideas you dismiss before they wriggle out of your brain have no chance whatsoever. ?Don?t say ?NO? until you?ve said ?YES?. Further your own ideas. Keep it simple.

May 2012 global temperatures second warmest on record

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? The globally-averaged temperature for May 2012 marked the second warmest May since record keeping began in 1880. May 2012 also marks the 36th consecutive May and 327th consecutive month with a global temperature above the 20th century average.

May 2012 Selected Climate Anomalies and Events

Most areas of the world experienced much warmer-than-average monthly temperatures, including nearly all of Europe, Asia, northern Africa, most of North America and southern Greenland. Only Australia, Alaska and parts of the western U.S.-Canadian border region were notably cooler than average.

With the dissipation of La Ni?a in April, ocean conditions in May were "ENSO neutral." According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, there is a 50 percent chance that El Ni?o conditions will emerge during the second half of 2012.

Global temperature highlights: May

  • The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for May was second warmest on record for May, behind 2010, at 59.79?F (15.46?C) or 1.19?F (0.66?C) above the 20th century average. This was the warmest monthly departure from normal since November 2010. The margin of error associated with this temperature is ?0.13?F (0.07?C).
  • May marked the 36th consecutive May and 327th consecutive month with a global temperature above the 20th century average. The last below-average temperature May was May 1976 and the last below-average temperature month was February 1985.
  • The global land surface temperature for May was 2.18?F (1.21?C) above the 20th century average of 52.0?F (11.1?C), the all-time warmest May on record. The margin of error is ?0.25?F (0.14?C).
  • Warmer-than-average monthly temperatures occurred across much of the Northern Hemisphere while cooler-than-average temperatures occurred in parts of the Southern Hemisphere.
    • Spain observed its fourth warmest May since national records began in 1960 at 4.9?F (2.7?C) above average.
    • The nationally-averaged daytime temperature in Australia was near average (+0.5?C), while the average nighttime temperature was well below average (-2.9?C), ranking as the fifth coolest May nighttime temperature in that country's 63-year period of record.
  • For the ocean, the May global sea surface temperature was 0.81?F (0.45?C) above the 20th century average of 61.3?F (16.3?C), or 10th warmest May on record. The margin of error is ?0.07?F (0.04?C).
  • Neutral ocean conditions continued during May as sea surface temperatures continued to warm across the equatorial Pacific Ocean. According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, there is a 50 percent chance that El Ni?o conditions will emerge during the second half of 2012. In addition to influencing seasonal climate outcomes in the United States, El Ni?o is often, but not always, associated with global temperatures that are higher than temperatures in the neutral and La Ni?a phases.

Global temperature highlights: March-May

  • The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for the March-May months was 1.06?F (0.59?C) above the 20th century average of 56.7?F (13.7?C), making it seventh warmest March-May period on record. The margin of error associated with this temperature is ?0.14?F (0.08?C).
  • The global land surface temperature was 2.02?F (1.12?C) above the 20th century average of 46.4?F (8.1?C), making it fourth warmest March-May on record. The margin of error is ?0.25?F (0.14?C). Record April and May warmth in the Northern Hemisphere led to the warmest spring on record with a large temperature departure of 2.48?F (1.38?C) above the long-term average. That warmth was most pronounced across central Eurasia and most of North America. It was cooler than average across Alaska in the Northern Hemisphere and Australia in the Southern Hemisphere.
    • The United States reported its warmest spring on record with 31 states in the eastern two-thirds of the country experiencing record warmth. The national temperature was 5.2?F (2.9?C) above its long-term average, surpassing the previous record by 2.0?F (1.1?C).
    • In central Europe, Austria reported its seventh warmest spring since records began in 1767. In the east, the district of Lienz was just 0.4?F (0.2?C) short of the record warmth of May 2007.
    • The Southern Hemisphere autumn was cooler-than-average across most of Australia with daytime temperatures 0.67?F (0.37?C) below average and nighttime temperatures ranking as fourth lowest on record (-1.67?F / 0.9?C), or lowest since 1994. La Ni?a, which tends to have a cooling influence over the region, ended during the season.
  • For the ocean, the March-May global sea surface temperature was 0.70?F (0.39?C) above the 20th century average of 61.0?F (16.1?C), tying with 2011 as 11th warmest March-May on record. The margin of error is ?0.07?F (0.04?C).

Polar sea ice and precipitation highlights: May

  • The average Arctic sea ice extent during May was 3.5 percent below average, resulting in the 12th smallest May sea ice extent on record since satellite records began in 1979.
  • On the opposite pole, Antarctic sea ice during May 2012 was 2.4 percent above average and ranked as 15th largest May extent in the 34-year period of record.
  • The Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent during May 2012 was much below average and ranked as second smallest May snow cover extent in the 46-year period of record. Eurasian snow cover extent was its all-time smallest May extent on record and the North American snow cover extents ranked its eighth smallest May extent on record.
  • With the dissipation of La Ni?a in April, below-average precipitation fell across Australia in May with an average amount that was 60 percent of the monthly average. Western Australia reported its fifth driest May with precipitation just 22 percent of average.
  • Spain was dry in May with average precipitation at 60 percent of the monthly average. The country's Mediterranean regions and archipelagos were the driest regions with precipitation less than 25 percent of average. In the east, stations in Murcia and Castellon reported its driest Mays on record.
  • Much of India was drier than average for the month as the country anticipated the onset of its annual southwest monsoon season.

Global temperature highlights: Year to Date

  • On the heels of a relatively mild first quarter, warmth during April and May pushed 2012 close to a top 10 warm status for the year to date. The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for the January-May period was 0.90?F (0.50?C) above the 20th century average of 55.5?F (13.1?C), marking the 11th warmest such period on record. The margin of error is ?0.16?F (0.09?C).
  • The January-May worldwide land surface temperature was 1.53?F (0.85?C) above the 20th century average, marking the 10th warmest such period on record. The margin of error is ?0.38?F (0.21?C).
  • The global ocean surface temperature for the year to date was 0.67?F (0.37?C) above average and ranked as the 12th warmest such period on record and the coolest since 2008. The margin of error is ?0.07?F (0.04?C).

Evidence

Folk wisdom used to hold that you could protect an idea or other intellectual property by mailing yourself a copy and sticking the unopened envelope in a safe deposit box. The postmark on the envelope would serve as proof that you were first with the idea. A new service simply called Evidence (free) brings that concept into the modern world and expands it significantly. When you send an email message using this service, it returns a time-stamped secure certificate that serves as proof that you sent the message and any attachments. Evidence's proof is quite a bit more definitive than a postmark on an envelope.

The company uses the term eEvid to describe a message confirmed by their service. It's pronounced "ee eevid" ? I had to ask. A free basic subscription lets you send 50 eEvids per year; you can earn extra eEvids by successfully referring friends to the service.

If 50 isn't enough, an Evidence+ Unlimited account (69.95 ?/year) lets you send all you want. With an Evidence+ Archive account (29.95 ?/year) the company offers "perpetual safekeeping" of your sent files. Finally the Evidence+ Suite (84.92 ?/year) offers both archiving and unlimited eEvids. Yes, the pricing is strictly in Euros, so your exact cost in dollars will depend on the day's exchange rate.

Sending an eEvid
As soon as you sign up for a free account and define a password, you're ready to use Evidence. Sending an eEvid is ridiculously simple. All you do is append ".eevid.com" to the address of each recipient, for example, billg@microsoft.com.eevid.com. Of course, you must send from the account with which you signed up for the service.

The Evidence server generates a record of sending, strips the added eevid.com from the addresses, and sends the message along to each recipient. You receive a digitally signed and time-stamped response certifying the message, its contents, and delivery.

?Your response from Evidence includes two PDF files. One contains the message contents and header, the other includes SHA-256 hashes of the first file and of any attachments. Since any modification of the file would change the hash, this data serves as proof that the file is unchanged. And as the certificate is digitally signed using the timestamp, it's also secured against tampering.

The message's recipient won't have any idea that you've used this service. If you want to be sure the recipient knows you're retaining confirmation, you'll have to say so in the message. OK, technically there are clues in the message header that point to the Evidence servers, but there's no reason for the recipient to go poking around in the message header.

Earth Approaching Tipping Point Say Scientists

And how is declaring "engineering solutions will be found" not just simply passing the buck to the future?

Well, of course, it has to be in the future, because we've so resolutely refused to solve the problems in the past.;-)

But various others have pointed out that the "engineering solutions" may not be very far in the future, if we want to implement them. One of the consequences of the accumulated evidence that the recent climate changes are primarily due to human activity is that we know that we're capable of pushing the world' climate around, and we know how we've been doing it. So from an engineering viewpoint, pushing it in a different direction (e.g., stability or slower change) is within our capabilities. Granted, the "Further Research is Needed" mantra applies, but we know enough to take effective action now if we want to.

The major questions aren't scientific or technical; they're economic, political and religious. That is, it doesn't do much good to convince the engineers that there's a problem that they can fix. They already know about it (and are looking for funding;-). We also have to get the go-ahead from the leaders of our governments and major corporations.

The outlook isn't necessarily good. We do have documentation about various major disasters throughout human history, including many that were caused by humans who understood that they were causing a disaster. History says that humans often don't act on such knowledge, even when their society is collapsing around them.

We saw a good small-scale example of this back in 2005. Before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the US Government ran a simulation study of such events. Google "Hurricane Pam" to read all about it. Katrina was pretty similar to Pam. The US Army Corps of Engineers produced a thorough report on the physical infrastructure of the Mississippi Delta, which listed all the places where the levees would later break during Katrina, plus estimates of the maintenance required to fix the problems. Congress turned down the applications for funding. Everyone involved knew that it was just a matter of time until the disaster hit, but the government didn't fund the maintenance, and the disaster followed the engineers' prediction practically to the letter.

This is a local example of the sort of disasters that our political systems have historically perpetrated with full knowledge beforehand. It looks like the climate-change story is a repeat performance. Some of the scientists involved decided to try to publicise it a couple of decades back, on the grounds that it was a growing problem that we could probably fix if we want to. But history says that we probably won't do anything about it, although we know how to.

(If you want a bigger example, look up the history of ozone depletion. That's actually a fairly good example of partial success. The depletion is known to be almost entirely due to chemical compounds added to the atmosphere by human activity. Our dumping of those compounds has been radically decreased, and the depletion has nearly leveled off, though it hasn't been reversed. But it is an interesting example of human governments cooperating on a global level to deal with a global problem. So there's some hope. We don't always fail when facing such large-scale problems.;-)

(AP) ? Chris Bosh was moved by the raucous ovation he got when checking into the game.

The Miami crowd was largely silent afterward. And unless the Heat figure out a way to beat the Celtics in Boston on Thursday night, Bosh's return will be the last time his home fans see him this season.

Kevin Garnett scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Paul Pierce scored 19 ? including a huge 3-pointer over LeBron James' outstretched arm with 52.9 seconds left ? and the Celtics moved one win away from the NBA finals by beating the Heat 94-90 on Tuesday night.

Boston now leads the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals 3-2, with Game 6 coming Thursday on the Celtics' home floor.

"In situations like this you can only focus on one game at a time, obviously," Bosh said. "We know what we have to do. It's pretty simple. No reason to really dwell on it and think about it a lot. We have to go to Boston and win, and we have to do whatever it takes to get that done."

James finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds for Miami, though he went 8 minutes without scoring in the final quarter. Dwyane Wade scored 27 for the Heat, who got no more than nine from anyone else.

Bosh played just over 14 minutes in his return after missing nine games with a lower abdominal strain. He scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds, six of them offensive, on 3 for 8 shooting.

"I didn't see a great deal of rust," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I think his energy, everything, was good."

Bosh checked in with 5:06 remaining in the opening quarter, the first minutes for the All-Star forward since he got hurt in Game 1 of Miami's second-round series against Indiana.

The Heat decided before the game that Bosh would play off the bench, something he had done only 12 times in his career, all those during his rookie season with the Toronto Raptors. Bosh got a loud ovation when his face was shown on the overhead scoreboard during the national anthem, and the crowd stood and roared when he walked to the scorer's table to check into the game.

In the end, the crowd was standing. Just this time, it wasn't to cheer ? it was more out of shock. A Heat team that lost in last year's NBA finals and was favored to get there again this year is now one loss away from the offseason.

"I never thought we would be in this situation," Wade said. "I'm not really surprised by much. I've seen a lot. It's not an ideal situation for us, but we're not going to have any excuses. They beat us. They came in our house and got one so we're hoping to do the same."

Bosh began light on-court workouts about a week ago and participated with teammates in Miami's shootaround on Tuesday morning. It took one more workout, about 90 minutes before the game, to convince Spoelstra and the Heat training staff that Bosh was ready.

Spoelstra said he wasn't worried about the notion that weaving Bosh back into the rotation would be problematic, even with the stakes so high. And Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he didn't think Miami would struggle with that, either.

Rivers said if the Celtics had a situation where some of his key players, like Pierce, Garnett, Ray Allen or Rajon Rondo, had missed time but could play in a Game 5 of a tied-up playoff series, it'd be an easy call.

"I would do it. I think I would always do it," Rivers said. "I mean, listen, if Kevin, Paul, Ray, Rondo were out and they could play tonight and they hadn't played, I'd play 'em. I wouldn't even hesitate. I don't think really coaches hesitate on that. And number one, Bosh hasn't been out that long. It's not like he's been out two months and he's just coming back. He's missed, what, seven, eight games, nine games? That's not that long."

Bosh's return came on a difficult day for his family. Miami Beach police said a masseuse collapsed at Bosh's home and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital on Monday night. Police did not find any signs of foul play, and Bosh and his wife Adrienne Bosh released a statement through the team expressing sadness for the masseuse's family.

"Last evening, a massage therapist that we have used for some time, arrived at our home to provide massage therapy," read the statement. "Shortly after she arrived, she fainted and lost consciousness. We called 911 and emergency personnel arrived at our home shortly thereafter. They took her to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she passed away. Our hearts go out to her family. We are very sorry for their loss."

Afterward, Bosh was emotional when asked to discuss the whirlwind 24 hours.

"It was good just to be able to do what I love," Bosh said. "I was happy just to do that. With everything going on, life happens."

On Wednesday, he and the Heat will leave for Boston, and Bosh said he ? and his teammates ? will be locked in on the massive challenge.

"It's going to be an extremely difficult time," Bosh said. "But that's what the playoffs are about. In order to get to where we want to go, we're going to have to face huge challenges. And I think we're in the biggest challenge of our lives right now, of our professional careers. We just have to overcome it. It's going to be very, very difficult. But that's how it's supposed to be."

Google Has Its Own Fleet of Airplanes to Map the World in 3D [Video]

Talking about what goes into its improved 3D maps, Google casually mentioned today that it uses a fleet of airplanes to repeatedly fly over cities, shooting photos at 45-degrees and from directly overhead. That's cool tech, and all, but, like, Google has its own damn fleet of airplanes. More »

Bee-killing virus gets supercharged by mites

LONDON | Thu Jun 7, 2012 2:07pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Parasitic mites have turbo-charged the spread of a virus responsible for a rise in honey bee deaths around the world, scientists said on Thursday.

Bee populations have been falling rapidly in many countries, fuelled by a phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder. Its cause is unclear but the Varroa mite is a prime suspect, since it spreads viruses while feeding on hemolymph, or bee's "blood".

To clarify the link between mites and viruses, a team led by Stephen Martin of Britain's University of Sheffield studied the impact of Varroa in Hawaii, which the mites have only recently invaded.

They found the arrival of Varroa increased the prevalence of a single type of virus, deformed wing virus (DWV), in honey bees from around 10 percent to 100 percent.

At the same time the amount of DWV virus in the bees' bodies rocketed by a millionfold and there was a huge reduction in virus diversity, with a single strain of DWV crowding out others.

"It is that strain that is now dominant around the world and seems to be killing bees," Martin said in a telephone interview. "My money would be on this virus as being key."

Other factors - including fungi, pesticides and decreased plant diversity - are thought to play a role in colony collapse, but Ian Jones of the University of Reading said the latest findings pointed to the virus and mite combination as being the main culprit.

"This data provides clear evidence that, of all the suggested mechanisms of honey bee loss, virus infection brought in by mite infestation is a major player in the decline," he said.

Jones, who was not involved the research, said the findings published in the journal Science reinforced the need for beekeepers to control Varroa infestation in colonies.

The threat to bee populations extends across much of Europe and the United States to Asia, South America and the Middle East, experts say.

Bees are important pollinators of flowering plants, including many fruit and vegetable crops. A 2011 United Nations report estimated that bees and other pollinators such as butterflies, beetles or birds do work worth 153 billion euros ($191 billion) a year for the human economy.

Investigators head to scene of fatal tanker crash

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Federal authorities investigating a fatal crash of an air tanker fighting a southern Utah wildfire over the weekend plan to visit the wreckage site in hopes of determining what caused the plane to plummet into a canyon and disintegrate over a 600-yard debris field.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Van McKenny says authorities would visit the site for the first time Tuesday to gather evidence.

McKenny says authorities will be looking into all potential causes, including weather, mechanical failure and pilot error.

"It will all really depend on what we see, evidence on the ground," he said.

Once a Cold War-era submarine attack plane, the Lockheed P2V has for years been both a mainstay of the nation's aerial firefighting arsenal and a cause for concern.

Flying in the turbulent, unforgiving skies above raging wildfires, the planes have crashed at least seven times from either mechanical problems or pilot error, causing 16 deaths, dating back to 1990 when they were slowly added to the nation's firefighting fleet.

The latest crash in Utah that killed two pilots and a crash-landing by another one of the same planes in Nevada, both on Sunday, have renewed calls for the federal government to speed up efforts to modernize the nation's firefighting aircraft fleet used to drop fire retardant.

All of it, just as the busiest part of the wildfire season begins in the West.

"As the air tanker fleet continues to atrophy, it's going to reduce the country's ability to get there early, which is why so many of these fires mushroom," said Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., chairman of the Forestry Subcommittee.

Wyden led a push in March by a group of senators from the West to get the U.S. Forest Service to bring newer planes into service.

On Sunday, a tanker went down in western Utah as crews battled a lightning-sparked wildfire that jumped the Nevada border about 150 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower said it appeared a wing tip hit the ground in a rocky canyon. The plane practically disintegrated, killing both pilots aboard.

Firefighters said they didn't expect full containment of the 8,000-acre blaze burning over rolling hills of pine, juniper and cheat grass until Sunday.

The plane, owned by Neptune Aviation Services of Missoula, Mont., was built in 1962, according to federal aviation records, but had been modified to fight fires and was among only a handful of air tankers available nationwide.

Another P2V, this one owned by Minden Air Corp. in Minden, Nev., was fighting a wildfire south of Reno on Sunday. Its crash-landing at Minden-Tahoe Airport was captured on video, with the plane dropping to its belly and sliding across the runway. No one was injured.

The government previously had relied primarily on C-130 cargo planes for firefighting efforts but started slowly adding P2Vs to the fleet in the early 1990s, then began relying much more on the planes after two C-130 crashes in 2002.

The number of large firefighting aircraft has steadily dwindled since 2004, when the Forest Service grounded 33 air tankers after a number of high-profile crashes. Two of those involved the wings falling off the aircraft as they were fighting fires.

That left 11 tankers at the start of this year to mount aerial assaults on wildfires. Among those were nine P2Vs like the one that crashed over the weekend in Utah. A DC-10 and a BAE-146 make up the rest of the fleet.

"They are aging, and we know we need to replace them," said Tom Harbour, the U.S. Forest Service's fire and aviation operations director. "That's why the chief (of the Forest Service) sent Congress an air tanker strategy a couple months ago that said we needed to modernize the fleet."

Harbour said the agency has concluded that the nation needs up to 28 of the next generation of air tankers, those that can fly faster and carry more retardant. Overall, the Forest Service budgets $70 million a year on firefighting aircraft out of $2 billion overall fighting wildfires. Bids are being evaluated on the next generation planes, but the service currently pays $10,000 a day and $6,000 per hour of flight time for exclusive-use contracts.

However, replacing the aging fleet will not happen quickly, Harbour added. A contract for three of them will be awarded later this month, and four more will be added next year, he said.

The service doesn't own any of the firefighting aircraft, but instead contracts with private companies like Minden and Neptune, whose fleet is made up largely of the P2Vs.

A review of firefighting plane crashes over the last two decades found that various models of the P2V aircraft had been involved in at least seven fatal crashes while fighting wildfires, including the one that crashed on Sunday.

Neptune Aviation, which owns five of those planes, reported several hydraulics failures on their P2Vs, one that led to an emergency landing in Montana in April. Another one was taken out of service in February after workers found a crack in the wing support.

Neptune released a statement Monday afternoon that said it would not comment on accident specifics, but noted the aircraft "made contact with the ground while flying in the active fire drop zone."

The company temporarily grounded its fleet to debrief crewmembers and mechanics, but all of the company's air tankers have been returned to active duty, the statement said.

Authorities identified the pilots as Todd Neal Tompkins and Ronnie Edwin Chambless, both of Boise, Idaho.

Tompkins' wife Cassandra Cannon said her husband had flown air tankers for 17 years and believed the work he did was meaningful and impacted the safety of others. She said Tompkins was dispatched to the wildfire Sunday and immediately began flyovers.

Stress is subjective - Reality Creation Coaching

This article will detail how to release stress totally and completely and for the rest of your life by learning that there is no such thing as stress. With the exception of traumatic incidents, stress is mostly subjective. If that weren?t true you could point to stress and say ?that is stress? just like you could?can point to a tree and say ?thats a tree? or to a car and say ?thats a car?. Can you show me stress? You cant because its not an objective reality. You might mention what causes you to emotionally and physically react and label that ?stress?. Several phones ringing, someone shouting at you, someone criticizing you, a schedule-planner full of important appointments, the screaming of a baby, but nobody is forcing you to react to any of these things, much less with stress. A screaming baby is just a screaming baby and a schedule-planner is just a schedule-planner. Some people react strongly, some don?t. What you actually mean by ?stress? is an inner resistance and contraction of body muscles, which creates a certain tension. This conditioned response to noise and upheaval can deliberately be reversed. ?

In my experience illness and stress go hand in hand. Scientific research has tried to correlate everything from cancer to alzheimers to stress, because so many of the patients themselves testify to stress being the cause. The reason science has not been able to find conclusive proof for what most people already know, is because most test-study-groups are done with the presupposition that stress is caused by objective external factors. The researchers will then typically test people who have been in difficult external circumstances. However, not all people react the same to circumstances, therefore many of these studies are somewhat skewed.

There is a small percentage of conditions that objectively create tension and psycho-spiritual wounds. A few examples of such conditions would be losing a loved one, being involved in a war, having a car accident, ?being betrayed or cheated on, being violently assaulted, etc. In such instances it will take some time for the wounds to heal and you are not expected to be grinning and happy on the very next day (that would in fact be a sign of suppression/denial of the event). But all of the other daily life cases we call stress can be released in an instant ? the overwhelm of having ?too much to do?, time-pressure, worries about money, concerns about the future, regrets about the past, high expectations from others, public speaking, being criticized, being in a traffic jam, having a messy desk, etc. And you can do so without suppressing your feelings. If you suppress stress rather than release it, you eventually become flat and emotionless. If you release stress, you become calm and free.?

So how to do this? You do it in the very moment your conditioned reaction to external pressures arises. You stop whatever you are doing, and you simply observe and witness your reaction to whatever is happening. In that very second you are no longer the react-er but rather the observer of the conditioned reaction. In that space you have more of a choice of whether to continue reacting or not. In the levels of energy course I have a 30-minute exercise where I deliberately put people into stressful and overwhelming conditions, while coaching them to calm down, reduce reaction and ?become the witness? rather than the one resisting the event. This is such a radical shift from the normal human conditioning that it feels genuinely liberating and makes ones whole life a brand new experience. I tell people to ?become the eye of the cyclone?. Eye cyclone is one of the most aggressive, chaotic and overwhelming storms there is, but in the center of a cyclone, it its very ?eye? there is total peace and stillness. It is important to note that this deliberate reduction of ones reaction is not a suppressing or flattening of the physical and emotional responses. One lets the responses pass through without doing anything with them. So when someone disapproves of you there might be a slight hurt in the solar-plexus for example. You do not try to get rid of this hurt or do anything with it. Neither do you go on a spree of action trying to ?fix it? (that would be reactive and only create more conundrum). Neither do you take pills or eat foods to suppress it. Instead you simply witness it, witness the automatic responses, witness what is going on. The more you witness and become aware of what is happening, the more it reduces and releases over time.?

?Reducing Reaction? is one way to release stress. Another way to do it is by embracing whatever seems to be causing stress, thus becoming bigger than the stress. Whatever you can embrace, you are bigger-than. Instead of projecting a ?no? attitude you begin projecting a ?yes? attitude, as if you could easily take on 10 more errands, 10 more phone calls, 10 more inconveniences. This shift requires a radical change in your definition of life. If you define life as having to cater to your whims and anything that doesn?t being ?extraneous?, you will have difficulty with this. If, on the other hand, you view everything as belonging to life, as happening to you for a good reason, this will be rather easy and stress will be a thing of the past, at least most of the time.?Thus you are able to increase my ?threshold of overwhelm? (the point when I get overwhelmed and begin losing energy and getting emotional) to a fairly high level.?To learn more about this, also consider downloading the audio ?stressfree in 10 Minutes? (available in the?Members-Section).?

In other words, performing in front of a large group of people can be joy, it does not have to be stress. Getting hundreds of customers a day can be joy, it doesnt have to be stress. If you believe ?they expect much of me?, exchange that with the belief ?they just want to have fun?. Cleaning the household can be joy, it does not have to be stress. If you have the belief ?cleaning up is boring?, exchange that with the belief ?cleaning up is zen meditation if done consciously. It will empower me beyond belief?. If you believe that travelling is stressful, exchange that with the belief ?travelling is fascinating because so many new things are seen and learned?. If you believe that a traffic jam is stressful, exchange that with the belief ?traffic jams are a great opportunity to think about some important things?.?

Facebook to experiment with access for under-13s

Facebook to experiment with access for minors

Facebook is exploring options to connect kids to its social network, while ensuring it obeys federal laws. According to the Wall Street Journal, the social network is pushing for a more formalized structure for under-13s in an effort to curb users registering under a false age. Consumer Reports currently pegs the number of under-age users at around 7.5 million. Despite other privacy concerns, Facebook is reportedly looking to add buffers and parental controls to any kid-friendly version that might result from its current experiments. It could also tie parents' accounts to their little tykes' pages, allowing game purchases to be made through their bank details. Well, that new HQ isn't going to pay for itself.

Decriminalize marijuana? Four ways America's views of pot are changing

For more than 20 years, national polls have shown increasing acceptance of marijuana use, proponents of legalization note. But acceptance has not yet hit a critical mass, opponents counter. They point to the failure of?California?s Proposition 19 in 2010, which would have allowed small amounts of marijuana for personal use while regulating and taxing it.?

Polls offer different views on whether ? and how much ? views of marijuana have changed since then.

Some experts say the first state to approve marijuana for casual use is right around the corner, perhaps as soon as this November.

According to a Rasmussen Reports poll released in May, 56 percent of Americans?now support legalizing cannabis and regulating it the way alcohol and tobacco are. Some 36 percent were opposed.?

Dale Gieringer, state coordinator of?California?NORML?(National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), said the Rasmussen poll marked a high water moment for the legal marijuana movement, suggesting that it showed?"the?strongest support ever recorded."

According to the telephone poll in April, 47 percent of adults also "believe the country should legalize and tax marijuana in order to help solve the nation's fiscal problems." Forty-two percent of respondents disagreed, while 10 percent are undecided.

Another poll by Angus Reid also suggested that Americans broadly agreed that marijuana crimes should be punished less harshly than some others.?Three of four Americans favor the use of fines or probation in lieu of criminal sanctions for marijuana offenders, according to the May?poll.

In addition, 74 percent of respondents said they favored the imposition of "alternative penalties," such as fines, probation, or community service, rather than prison for violators of marijuana possession laws. By contrast, only 41 percent of respondents favored such penalties for credit-card fraud, and only one-third for drunk driving offenders.

A May poll by the?University of Southern California?Dornsife/Los Angeles Times, however, suggested that California voters still reject legal marijuana by similar margins to 2010. Prop. 19 failed with 54 percent voting against and 46 percent in favor. The USC poll found that 50 percent of California voters remain opposed to legal marijuana, while 46 percent are in favor?of ?general or recreational use by adults.?

Asian markets hit by poor US jobs figures

AFP - Asian markets tumbled further on Monday as poor US jobs data added to already weak sentiment caused by Spain's banking crisis and political uncertainty in Greece.

Dealers were also digesting a string of manufacturing figures from Asia to the United States that pointed to a global economic slowdown.

Tokyo ended 1.71 percent, or 144.62 points, lower at 8,295.63, with electronics giant Sony the stand-out loser as it fell below 1,000 yen for the first time since 1980, ending at 996 yen.

Seoul fell 2.80 percent, shedding 51.38 points to close at 1,783.13, while Sydney slipped 1.94 percent, or 78.9 points, to 3,985.0.

Hong Kong tumbled 2.01 percent, or 372.75 points, to 18,185.59 and Shanghai was down 2.73 percent, or 64.89 points, at 2,308.55.

Washington said on Friday that the economy added a meagre 69,000 jobs in May -- the slowest rise for 12 months -- while the unemployment rate rose for the first time in almost a year, to 8.2 percent.

The Labor Department also slashed its estimate of April job gains by 33 percent, to 77,000. The market has softened in recent months, from an average gain of 226,000 in the first three months of the year.

The disappointing numbers came after the government said the world's largest economy slowed from an annual growth rate of 3.0 percent in the final quarter of 2011 to a 1.9 percent pace in January-March, too weak a pace to dent unemployment.

They also compounded investor woes after purchasing manager indices for May from China, India, the eurozone and the United States all came in lower, underlining the weak state of the global economy.

The Dow fell 2.22 percent -- leaving it in the red for the first time in 2012 -- while the broad-based S&P 500 tumbled 2.46 percent and the Nasdaq Composite sank 2.82 percent.

Global markets have been sent into a tailspin as Europe's debt troubles returned to the fore last month after a general election in Greece saw a strong showing for anti-austerity parties, while a bank crisis in Spain has left the already beleaguered economy teetering.

Attention will turn to the weekend when Greece will hold a second election, with markets hoping for a victory for pro-austerity groups. Economists fear another result could see Athens tear up a bail-out deal and in turn end up leaving the eurozone.

The euro bought $1.2420, down from $1.2423 in New York late Friday, where it had risen on the back of the poor US jobs figures.

It also fell to 96.86 yen, down from 97.01 yen in New York while the dollar eased to 77.99 yen, from 78.08 yen on Friday.

On oil markets, Brent North Sea crude for July shed $1.47 to $96.96 a barrel, and New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for July, fell $1.23 to $82.00.

Gold was at $1,616.70 an ounce at 0800 GMT, compared with $1,553.00 late Friday.

In other markets:

-- Taipei fell 2.98 percent, or 211.43 points, to 6,894.66.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. dropped 4.26 percent to Tw$76.5 while leading smartphone maker HTC ended 6.52 percent lower at Tw$387.0.

-- Manila slumped 3.40 percent, or 172.24 points, to 4,890.20.

SM Corp. fell 4.62 percent to 660 pesos and Philippine Long Distance Telephone was down 0.83 percent at 2,400 pesos but Calata Corp. bucked the trend to gain 8.86 percent to 23.95 pesos.

-- Wellington and Bangkok were closed for public holidays.

WATCH: Russell Brand Better Keep Mark Wahlberg Out Of Movie Awards Monologue

'I hope he doesn't say nothin' smart about me, because he's going to 'unpredictably' get his ass whooped,' 'Fighter' star jokes to MTV News.
By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

UNIVERSAL CITY, CaliforniaMark Wahlberg has a message for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards host: Crack the wrong jokes, Russell Brand, and you'd better duck.

Speaking to MTV News backstage at the taping of Spike TV's "Guys Choice Awards" on Saturday night, the man whose real-life boxing skills were on display in "The Fighter" acknowledged that the English comedian has a reputation for being unpredictable.

"I hope he does a good job," Wahlberg cautioned. "I hope he doesn't say nothin' smart about me, because he's going to 'unpredictably' get his ass whooped."

Wahlberg wore a sly grin as he delivered his beat-down promise, detailing further what might happen should Brand say something too biting from the Gibson Amphitheatre stage tonight (June 3): "I would put the worst insult of all time on him, for sure. And it's an easy thing to do, given his look."

The tongue-in-cheek rant was delivered to MTV News' own Josh Horowitz, who has been comically menaced by Wahlberg on several occasions. The pair have continued their playful banter on red carpets and at events ever since that infamous episode of "The Knife Show," which went viral.

The 40-year-old actor/producer will be one of the presenters at the Movie Awards Sunday night, which will put him in close proximity to his possible target. "No, no, he's a funny guy," Wahlberg said, letting up for a second. Then the taunts resumed: "But, you know, listen: f--- around, lay around — you know me."

An obscenities-laden rant that bobbed and weaved in and out of an English accent followed.

"Listen, I love ya, baby, but this ain't the mother------ to be f---ing with. This ain't the U.K., baby. This is where you get the ole' smack," he said. After the last two Golden Globes awards shows, at least one other British comedian developed a certain reputation for "roast"-style performances while hosting. "I hope [Brand] is a proper U.K. comic like Ricky Gervais and Steve Coogan," Wahlberg said, still mining his convincing British accent.

Wahlberg, of course, was playing all of it for laughs, frequently cracking a smile, but he did issue a further warning to Brand: stay away from the cast of his upcoming movie, "Ted." Mila Kunis, Seth McFarlane, and for some reason, the star of "Mad Men" (who isn't in "Ted") are off limits.

"Listen, I'm telling you, if he f---s with me, I'm the wrong dude to f--- with. And don't f--- with my people, either! Don't say sh-- about Mila, don't say sh-- about Seth. And don't say sh-- about Jon Hamm. I don't know him, but, I'm putting him under my wing."
